Here is why it’s up to you to get Giovanni famous. To understand better here is a little insight into how an artist becomes famous, and im not talking about the stories you hear in interviews such as “I was discovered because I sang for a guy who said he was the janitor but really he owned a record label”. Here is how it really works:
Step 1 Create A “Buzz” – Whats a buzz? you ask. A buzz is a slang term that means many people are excited and talking about someone or something. So forwarding links to friends, tweeting, facebooking and of course old fashion talking to people are all great ways to create a buzz.
Step 2 Have A Following – Every industry professional will be impressed by a large following. Each subscriber and fan equals $$$ to people in the music industry. More people means more money. The best way to prove a strong following is through album sales, each album sold represents a fan who supports an artist enough to put their money where their mouth is.
Step 3 Hire A Manger- A manager is someone who works on behalf of the artist to help strategize career moves as well as ensure that the artist is treated with respect. The more buzz and following the better the easier it is to find a good manager.
Step 4 Get A Booking Agent – A booking agent gets artists booked at various venues to perform. The bigger the following the better the booking agent, the better booking agent the bigger the venues, the bigger the venues the more buzz and following that are created.
Step 5 Sign To A Record Label – A record label is like a giant bank/machine that has access to resources and connections that the general public find very hard to access (usually because these people are under contract to the label and aren’t allowed to do anything without the labels permission) A label has the money and resources to ensure that a super buzz is created by getting radio stations to play the artists music, putting the artist front and center in the media, pairing up the artist with other artists that are already famous as well as put up the money for the best producers, stylists, graphic artists, musicians, publicisits etc. Keep in mind that the artist does have to pay all of this back which is why so many artists go bankrupt. The best scenario for an artist is to sign with a label once they are already pretty well known and have a large following because then they have much more negotiating power.
Step 6 Be Famous – This is when you get to tell people “Hey! That guy is famous because of me!”
(steps 3-5 are interchangeable and can happen in any order)
So now that you understand what it takes to get Giovanni famous you should have a good sense of why it is up to you to make it happen.
